About Us

Buddha Dhita Nunnery is a Theravada Buddhist Sanctuary located in the tranquil neighborhood of Lelystad. 

It is dedicated to the study and practice of the Buddha's original teachings as preserved in the Pali Canon. 

We offer a quiet and peaceful environment for individuals who wish to deepen their practice through retreat and study.

Our Mission and Goals

The mission is to provide supportive and nurturing environment for inner peace and growth, promoting mindful living, compassion and pursuit of wisdom through meditation practices and educational programs in the Theravada Buddhist tradition.

Our community is committed to spreading the teaching of the Buddha and fostering a sense of non-violence and compassion in the society.

 

The core activities of the Nunnery are to create a sustainable Theravada nunnery that provides housing for ordained nuns, offers spiritual guidance to women in crisis and makes Dhamma teachings accessible for all.

 

The activities that take place are meditation retreats, dhamma teaching, individual counseling, interfaith dialogue and social projects in Myanmar and in the Netherlands. 

Our Values

Pariyatti – Learning the Teachings

We believe that the path to wisdom begins with a deep understanding of the Dhamma. Through the study of scriptures and Buddhist teachings, we aim to build a strong foundation of knowledge that supports meaningful practice and integration.

Patipatti – Living the Teachings

True understanding arises through action. We emphasize the importance of applying the teachings in daily life, through meditation, mindfulness, and ethical conduct, cultivating wisdom and compassion through practice.

Pativedha – Realizing the Truth through 

The culmination of study and practice is direct, experiential, individual's transformation right here in the now. While our ultimate goal is the realization of the Dhamma, leading to liberation from suffering and the true experience of enlightenment.

 

Our Lineage

We follow, practice and teach the Dhamma as preserved and transmitted by the Venerable Ledi Sayadaw,

Mahasi Sayadaw, Pa Auk Sayadaw and other authentic teachers of their lineage. In addition, the profound teachings of the Sayadaw Dr Nandamalabhivamsa and Oxford Sayadaw has also been our highly respected source of enrichment, further deepening and guiding our transmission of the Dhamma.

Our History

In 2019, Sayalay Chandadhika, a Burmese Buddhist nun, was invited to the Netherlands by Jotika Hermsen, founder of Sangha Metta Foundation. Sayalay turned the residence into a nunnery, dedicating it to the service of Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha, to the best of her ability.
